What is the best way to ease someone’s pain and suffering? In this beautifully animated RSA Short, Dr Brené Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuine empathic connection if we are brave enough to really get in touch with our own fragilities.
Practice empathy while journaling about a challenging experience this week.
First, journal about the event from your perspective. Tell the story, share your thoughts, and explore your feelings.
Next, journal from the point of view of the other participant(s) in this scenario (it may be easiest to focus on a one-on-one interaction). Do your best to embody the other person to the best of your ability. Share the story from their point of view. Share the thoughts and feelings they may have experienced.
Finally, reflect on the experience. Did you learn anything about yourself? About the other person? About the situation? Was the exercise challenging or did it seem to flow naturally?
